Maddux looks to give Padres series win over Giants
Jun 27, 2007 - 2:01 PM San Diego (44-33) at San Francisco (33-44) 3:35 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux takes the mound for the San Diego Padres as they look to take the rubber game of a three-game series with the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
Maddux (6-4, 3.84 ERA) will look to get back on track after losing for the first time in five starts against the Boston Red Sox on Friday.
The future Hall of Famer, who is second on the active all-time wins list with 339, allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings, but absorbed a 2-1 loss.
The Giants will counter with Matt Cain (2-8, 3.46), who is winless in his last seven starts, going 0-5 with a 3.77 ERA since beating the Colorado Rockies on May 13. The righthander gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings against the New York Yankees on Friday.
A big problem for Cain has been a lack of run support. He has allowed more than three runs only twice in his last seven starts, but has five losses during that span.
The teams have split the first two games of the series, with each posting an extra-inning victory.
On Tuesday, rookie Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a go-ahead home run in the 10th as San Diego posted a 3-2 win.
