Glavine looks to continue success vs. Cardinals
Jun 27, 2007 - 3:25 PM St Louis (33-40) at NY Mets (42-33) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - Tom Glavine has bounced back from a rough stretch. Now he gets to face a team he has dominated throughout his career.
Glavine looks for career win No. 297 as the New York Mets continue their four-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
The 41-year-old Glavine (6-5, 4.38 ERA) is coming off his first win in more than a month after holding the Oakland Athletics to one run and six hits while posting season highs of eight innings and five strikeouts.
Prior to that start, the future Hall of Famer had been roughed up for 16 runs in his last 8 1/3 frames spanning two losing outings.
Now Glavine, who is 19-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 36 career starts vs. St. Louis, looks to win two straight for the first time since April 12-17. He has been especially good against St. Louis recently, winning three straight and 12 of his last 18 starts against them.
The Mets, who have struggled in June by going 9-15, dropped a 5-3 decision on Tuesday as rookie Brendan Ryan hit a go-ahead homer in the 11th inning for the Cardinals.
As for St. Louis, they will counter with Anthony Reyes (0-9, 6.64) who is trying to avoid the worst start to season since Anthony Young started 0-13 for the Mets in 1993.
Reyes surrendered five runs and nine hits in a season-low 4 1/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, and has allowed five or more runs in each of his last four starts.
