Athletics look for split of four-game series with Indians

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics look for a split of their four-game set with the Cleveland Indians when the teams face off in the series finale at Jacobs Field on Thursday afternoon.

On Wednesday, Jack Cust homered and had a career-high five RBI as the Athletics snapped a five-game losing streak with a 13-7 victory.

Oakland, which had scored just 10 runs during the five-game skid, used a six-run second inning to run out to a 9-0 lead early in the contest and eventually cruised to the victory.

The A's now will look for their second straight win behind Joe Blanton (7-4, 3.19 ERA), who yielded just five hits in eight scoreless innings in his last start against the New York Mets last Saturday.

The righthander has gone 3-1 with a 1.14 ERA in five starts this month.

Blanton will be opposed by Paul Byrd (6-3, 4.74), who yielded three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 frames at Washington last Saturday.

Byrd has not won since May 30, his fourth straight win last month. It has been a different story in June, where he is 0-2 with an 8.48 ERA.

Despite Wednesday's loss, the Indians have won six of their last nine games.
