Beltran, Mets look for revenge vs. Cardinals and Wainwright

Jun 28, 2007 - 1:40 PM St Louis (34-41) at Ny Mets (44-33) 7:10 pm EDT

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The last time the New York Mets faced St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright he was putting the finishing touches on their season.

Carlos Beltran and the New York Mets look to exact some revenge against Wainwright as they wrap up a four-game series with the Cardinals on Thursday.

Beltran struck out looking with the bases loaded on nasty breaking ball by Wainwright to end Game Seven of the National League Championship Series here last October.

Meanwhile, Wainwright (6-6,4.58 ERA), who was the closing in place of the injured Jason Isringhausen, has had an inconsistent season in his first year starting. The 26-year-old righthander has alternated wins and losses in his last four starts.

In his last start, Wainwright beat Philadelphia on Saturday, allowing two runs and seven hits in six innings.

Wainwright will be opposed by Orlando Hernandez (3-3, 2.77), who did not face the Cardinals in the NLCS due to a calf injury. Hernandez did face St. Louis the first week of the season and surrendered just one run and five hits in seven innings on April 3.

Hernandez, who will try and help the Mets to their sixth win in seven games against St. Louis, is winless in his last four starts. On Saturday, Hernandez allowed just six hits in seven scoreless innings, but received no run support in a 1-0 loss to Oakland.
