Red Sox look to snap three-game slide
Jun 29, 2007 - 1:16 PM Texas (32-46) at Boston (48-29) 7:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) - A tough road trip culminated in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Seattle Mariners, but the Boston Red Sox still have the best record in baseball.
On Friday, the Red Sox will welcome the worst team in the AL, the Texas Rangers, to Fenway Park for the start of a four-game series.
Tim Wakefield (7-8, 4.52 ERA) will be on the mound for Boston. The veteran knuckleballer has been getting knocked around lately, yielding 11 runs in 11 combined innings over his last two starts.
He is 1-1 this season against the Rangers, allowing five earned runs in 13 total innings.
Texas may want to leave Michael Young and Sammy Sosa on the bench for this one, as the two are a combined 11-for-52 (.211) in their careers against Wakefield.
The Rangers will counter with Jamey Wright (1-1, 7.43). The journeyman righthander pitched well in his last start, surrendering two runs in 5 2/3 innings to earn a win against Houston.
Wright is catching the Red Sox at the right time. Their supposedly potent offense managed more than four runs just twice on their 4-5 road trip, and shortstop Juilo Lugo's current 0-for-31 slump has dropped his average to .190, the lowest mark amongst all major league regulars.
