Pirates look to send Nationals to fifth straight loss
Jun 30, 2007 - 1:07 PM Washington (32-47) at Pittsburgh (34-45) 7:05 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) - The Pittsburgh Pirates aim for their fourth win in five games Saturday when they host the Washington Nationals.
In the opener of the three-game series Friday, the Pirates rallied for a 3-2 victory. Jose Bautista plated the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The Pirates, who have won five of seven at home, send Tom Gorzelanny (7-4, 3.10 ERA). Despite leading the team in wins, the lefthander has just one victory in his last five outings.
Gorzelanny never has faced the Nationals. Washington, which has lost four straight for the third time in 2007, sends Jason Bergmann (1-4, 2.72) to the hill.
Bergmann, who missed six weeks with a right elbow inflammation, returned from the disabled list on Monday, and allowed one run, four hits in four innings, but did not factor in a decision of a 4-1 loss to Atlanta. The righthander was on a strict pitch count, and was pulled after throwing 76 pitches.
The Nationals, who have also lost 10 of 13, have scored only five runs during their current skid.
