Mets recall Pelfrey, look to sweep Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - To earn their fifth sweep of the season, the New York Mets turn to the just recalled Mike Pelfrey.

Pelfrey and the Mets seek their fifth straight victory when they face the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

New York has won three straight from Philadelphia, including a 6-3 victory Saturday at Citizens Bank Ballpark. Carlos Beltran hit two home runs for the second straight game and Paul Lo Duca and David Wright also smacked homers for the Mets, who who have won eight of their last nine.

Pelfrey (0-5, 6.53 ERA) was recalled from Class AAA New Orleans of the Pacific Coast League Saturday following the win. The 23-year-old righthander is making his first start since May 12, when he allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings in a 12-3 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Lefthander Oliver Perez was scheduled to make the start but was scratched because of a stiff back. Mets manager Willie Randolph said Perez would be pushed back to Tuesday and see how he feels then.

Pelfrey, whose last win came July 18 at Cincinnati, will be making his first-ever appearance against the Phillies.

Philadelphia counters with 22-year-old rookie Kyle Kendrick (2-0, 5.00). The righthander, who began the season at Class AA Reading of the Eastern League, allowed four runs and six hits in six innings in an 11-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last Tuesday.

The Phillies are 3-0 when Kendrick pitches.
