Weaver, Mariners look to keep winning streak alive
Jul 1, 2007 - 2:42 PM Toronto (39-41) at Seattle (44-33) 4:05 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners are the hottest team in baseball, and Jeff Weaver is part of their success.
The resurgent righthander takes the mound on Sunday when the Mariners go for a sweep of a weekend series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Seattle owns the major's longest current winning streak at seven games and have won nine of 10 to pull to within four games of the first-place Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (50-31) in the American League West.
Weaver (2-6, 7.71 ERA) was the worst pitcher in the major leagues until coming off the disabled list on June 9. Since then, the veteran is 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA in four starts.
Toronto will counter with converted reliever Shaun Marcum (4-2, 3.13). The 25-year-old righthander has been the most consistent arm of late for the Blue Jays, as he has yet to suffer a loss since being moved into the rotation on May 13.
As a starter, Marcum is 3-0 with a 2.26 ERA in nine outings. He allowed one run and two hits over eight innings last Tuesday but did not figure in a decision against the Twins.
