Padres hope for better results at home vs. Marlins
Jul 2, 2007 - 1:37 PM Florida (38-44) at San Diego (46-34) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The San Diego Padres start a four-game series with the Florida Marlins on Sunday when they meet at Petco Park.
The Padres, who lead the National League West Division by one game over the Los Angeles Dodgers (46-36), have found the going rough at home lately, where they have dropped seven of their last nine games.
David Wells (3-5, 4.48 ERA) looks for his first win in five turns in the series opener. He is 1-1 with a 4.19 ERA in three career starts against Florida, including a no-decision on May 5.
The lefthander did not factor into the decision in his last start against San Francisco on Tuesday despite allowing just one run and six hits over six innings in a 3-2, 10-inning win.
Sergio Mitre (2-3, 2.75), who opposed Wells on May 5, is winless in his last six outings but has only one loss to show for it. In a 7-5, 10-inning loss to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, he surrendered five runs and seven hits over six frames.
The righthander is 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA in four career starts against the Padres. After going three straight games without giving up an earned run, Mitre has allowed 13 earned runs over his last three starts - spanning 18 2/3 innings - raising his ERA from 1.59 to 2.75.
