Perhaps without Rodriguez, Yankees look to Wang for win
Jul 3, 2007 - 1:17 PM Minnesota (42-39) at NY Yankees (39-41) 7:05 pm EDTBRONX, New York (Ticker) - The New York Yankees could be without Alex Rodriguez when they continue a four-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.
In the sixth inning of Monday's series opener, last season's American League MVP, Justin Morneau, inadvertently Rodriguez, the 2005 AL MVP winner, as he was running out the play at first base. Rodriguez was diagnosed with a strained left hamstring, leaving him day-to-day.
The last time the Yankees third baseman, who leads the majors with 28 homers and 80 RBI, went on the disabled list was seven years ago, in July 2000, with a right knee strain.
"I dont know (what happened)," Rodriguez said. "Two big guys banged up each other pretty good there. I think we're both fortunate because it could have been ugly for him and for me."
The one bit of good news is that Chien-Ming Wang (7-4, 3.86 ERA) will be following a vintage performance from Roger Clemens. The sinkerballer has done well against the Twins in his brief career, going 1-0 with a 2.57 ERA in two career starts against Minnesota.
Wang is 4-0 over his last six outings but has been roughed up to the tune of 10 earned runs over his last two starts, both no-decisions, including Thursday's suspended game against Baltimore. He surrendered six runs and nine hits over 6 1/3 innings in that contest.
Minnesota will respond with Carlos Silva (6-8, 4.15). The righthander is looking to win three straight starts for the first time since July 26-August 5 of last season.
Silva yielded five runs and six hits with two walks and five strikeouts in his last outing on Thursday, helping the Twins to an 8-5 win over Toronto.
