Red-hot Sheets gets start against Pirates

PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Ben Sheets will hope to continue his June success in his first start of July.

Sheets takes the mound looking to win his seventh straight decision when the Milwaukee Brewers face the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of a four-game series on Thursday.

Sheets (10-3, 3.19 ERA) might have been the best pitcher in the majors this past month, posting a 5-0 record with a 2.16 ERA and 40 strikeouts over 41 2/3 innings in six starts.

The 28-year-old righthander threw eight innings in his last start, allowing four runs and six hits with 11 strikeouts in a 13-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

He will be opposed by Tom Gorzelanny (8-4, 3.05), who is looking to impress enough fans to get voted onto the National League's All-Star team in the Final Vote.

The 24-year-old Gorzelanny yielded two runs and five hits with three walks and six strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings in a 7-3 triumph over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.

After dropping the first game, the Pirates have won the last two contests against the Brewers and are looking for their first three-game winning streak since May 25-27 against the Cincinnati Reds.

Adam LaRoche blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to lift Pittsburgh to a 5-3 victory in Wednesday's game against Milwaukee.
