Tigers' rookie Miller face potent Red Sox lineup
Jul 6, 2007 - 2:50 PM Boston (53-31) at Detroit (49-34) 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- Detroit Tigers' rookie Andrew Miller will face the toughest test of his young and promising career as he takes the hill against the Boston Red Sox in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.
Miller(3-2, 3.81 ERA) has the unenviable task of shutting down a Red Sox lineup that has scored 33 runs during the team's current four-game winning streak.
On Thursday Boston beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays into submission, 15-4, setting season highs for runs and hits (21) to help Josh Beckett earn his major-league leading 12th win.
The Tigers' first round pick of last year's draft, Miller will try and deny Boston a season-high tying fifth straight win.
In his first start against an American League team, the 6-6 lefthander allowed six runs - five earned - and six hits in five innings against Minnesota on Saturday. Prior to that Miller had allowed a total of eight runs in 23 1/3 innings over four interleague starts.
Detroit, which is 4-5 on its current 12-game homestand, is coming off a 12-3 win over C.C. Sabathia and the Cleveland Indians on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Miller will be opposed by Julian Tavarez (5-6, 4.39), who suffered a disappointing loss in which he allowed just one earned run over 5 2/3 innings against Texas on Sunday.
It marked the second straight defeat for Tavarez, who had previously won four straight decisions.
