Halladay gets start against Indians
Jul 6, 2007 - 3:16 PM Cleveland (51-34) at Toronto (41-43) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- Roy Halladay takes the mound for the Toronto Blue Jays when they host the Cleveland Indians in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.
After making the All-Star squad the last two years, Halladay (9-3, 4.27 ERA) will not be participating in the Midsummer Classic after being out-voted by Boston Red Sox reliever Hideki Okajima in the Final Vote.
The 30-year-old Halladay had a four-game winning streak snapped in his previous start, surrendering three runs and 10 hits with three strikeouts over six innings in an 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners last Saturday.
The 10-year veteran will have to shut down a talented Indians lineup which includes All-Star catcher Victor Martinez, who is currently on a nine-game hitting streak.
The switch-hitting Martinez is batting .322 with 14 home runs and a team-leading 64 RBI this season.
Cliff Lee (5-4, 4.90) will start for Cleveland, which hopes to avoid a three-game losing streak.
Lee has not received a loss in his last four starts, posting a 3-0 record with a 2.77 ERA over 26 innings over that span.
The 28-year-old lefthander pitched eight innings, yielding just one run and four hits with two walks and a season-high nine strikeouts in a 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday.
