Maroth hoping for first win as Cardinal
Jul 6, 2007 - 3:28 PM San Francisco (36-46) at St Louis (38-43) 8:10 pm EDTST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Mike Maroth will look for his first win as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Maroth will take the mound as the Cardinals hope to win their third straight when they host the San Francisco Giants in the opener of a three-game series on Friday.
St. Louis acquired Maroth (5-2, 5.08 ERA) from the Detroit Tigers to help its injury-depleted pitching staff on June 23.
The 29-year-old Maroth has no record with a 5.23 ERA in two starts with Cardinals this season. The lefthander surrendered five runs and six hits in just three innings in an 11-7 triumph over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday.
After allowing Ken Griffey Jr. to hit his 585th career home run in his last start, Maroth will be asked to keep Barry Bonds in the ballpark.
Bonds, who announced Thursday that he would not participate in the home run derby, went 1-for-4 with no home runs in a 6-3 loss to the Reds on Thursday.
The seven-time MVP has 751 career homers, four shy of Hank Aaron's all-time record.
The 42-year-old Bonds is batting .305 with 17 homers and 42 RBI this season.
Noah Lowry (8-6, 3.46) will get the start for the Giants. The lefthander pitched 6 2/3 innings, yielding one run and five hits with eight strikeouts in a 4-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.
