Viciedo's 10th-inning blast lifts White Sox over Mariners
Apr 7, 2013 - 11:37 PMVideo
Chicago closer Addison Reed (1-0) escaped a jam in the top of the 10th, fanning Michael Morse with runners on first and second.
Viciedo then hit a no-doubter to left field off Kameron Loe (1-1) with one out, helping the White Sox improve to 4-2 on the young season.
This being the White Sox and Mariners, it was bound to be a close contest. The last six games between these teams have been decided by one run.
"It was a hard-fought series. We had opportunities to do something and we didn't take advantage of it," said Seattle manager Eric Wedge.
Alex Rios homered in each game of this series and his leadoff shot off Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma made it 3-3 in the seventh. Iwakuma had retired 16 batters in a row following Adam Dunn's game-tying two-run homer in the first inning.
Morse belted his fifth home run of the season, a two-out, two-run blast against Chicago starter Chris Sale in the opening frame.
Kendrys Morales hit a solo home run off Sale in the sixth to put Seattle up 3-2.
Sale said the team bailed him out.
"We're here to do our job, but also pick each other up," the left-hander said.
Game Notes
Sale gave up five hits, walked two and struck out seven in seven innings ... Iwakuma allowed four hits over eight innings ... The White Sox have won 13 of their last 15 games vs. Seattle ... The Mariners have dropped eight consecutive series to the White Sox in Chicago ... Rios extended his hitting streak against Seattle to 13 games ... The Mariners were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
