Lynn dominates as Cardinals down Reds

Apr 10, 2013 - 5:10 AM St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Lance Lynn allowed just one run in six innings to help the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday night at Busch Stadium.

Lynn (1-0) added 10 strikeouts and allowed just four hits and one walk for St. Louis, which evened this three-game series at one game apiece.

"I was really impressed with what Lynn was able to do," said manager Mike Matheny. "He had good action on his fastball and it was fun to watch."

Matt Adams gave the Cardinals the lead with a pinch-hit, two-run homer in the sixth inning. Matt Carpenter added two hits and two runs scored.

After the game, Adams explained, "Runner in scoring position, I just wanted to get something elevated and get the barrel on it."

Bronson Arroyo (1-1) tossed five perfect innings before losing his composure in the sixth. He left the game after six having allowed four runs on five hits while striking out just two.

"You knew they were going to make a push," Arroyo said.

Shin-Soo Choo had two singles to lead Cincinnati, which was held without an extra base hit.

Lynn retired the first 10 batters he faced while striking out seven before Zack Cozart singled with one out in the fourth. Cozart moved to third on Joey Votto's base hit, then scored on Brandon Phillips' sacrifice fly to give Cincinnati an early lead.

The Reds threatened again in the sixth inning, but with Choo and Votto on base, Lynn managed to force Phillips and Jay Bruce each to ground out to the right side of the field, preventing any further damage.

St. Louis finally got on the board when Adams hit for Lynn and rocked a two- run home run to right field. The Cardinals weren't done however, as they added two more runs on an RBI groundout by Allen Craig and a Beltran single up the middle which plated Carpenter. Catcher Ryan Hanigan tagged out Matt Holliday at the plate on a perfect throw from Choo to end the frame.

Carpenter scored his second run of the game in the eighth inning on a wild pitch from Reds reliever Manny Parra.

The Cardinals bullpen pitched three scoreless innings while yielding just one hit and striking out four.

Game Notes

The Cardinals struck out just three times as a team while Cincinnati hitters were fanned 14 times ... Both teams left four men on base ... The Reds were 0- for-2 with runners in scoring position.
