Harden returns to the mound as A's face Mariners

Jul 7, 2007 - 1:38 PM Seattle (47-36) at Oakland (44-42) 4:05 pm EDT

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) - Once again Rich Harden will make an attempt at starting a game for the Oakland Athletics. The injury-plagued Harden (1-1, 1.17 ERA) takes the hill as a starter for the first time in nearly three months as Oakland continues its three-game series with the Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

The 26-year-old Canadian has battled injuries the past two seasons, and on April 15 left his start against New York with a right shoulder strain. Harden has made three relief appearances to regain his arm strength after being activated from the disabled list on June 22.

In all likelihood he will be kept on a strict pitch count against Seattle, which has lost three of four.

The Mariners took the opener, 7-1, on Friday as Adrian Beltre went 5-for-5 with two homers and two doubles.

Seattle will send ace Felix Hernandez (4-4, 4.11) to the mound as it looks to give new manager John McLaren his first winning streak. In his last start "King Felix" held Kansas City to two runs and five hits in eight innings on Saturday, but did not factor into the decision.
