Bonderman, Tigers look to continue good times, face Red Sox
Jul 7, 2007 - 1:39 PM Boston (53-32) at Detroit (50-34), 7:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers look to Jeremy Bonderman to continue their impressive play.
Bonderman and the Tigers aim to win their fourth in a row when they take on the equally impressive Boston Red Sox.
Detroit defeated Boston, 9-2, on Friday on the strength of homers by Curtis Granderson (solo homer) and Marcus Thames (grand slam) in the fifth inning. It was the Tigers third straight victory, having scored 27 runs in that span.
Bonderman (9-1, 3.58 ERA), who has the best winning percentage in the American League and second best only to the Dodgers' Brad Penny, looks to get over his disappointment of not being named to the 2007 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
Bonderman lost out to Boston reliever Hideki Okajima for the final spot on the AL roster after online voting was tallied on Thursday.
"I'm not worried about that stuff," said Bonderman of the balloting.
The 24-year-old, who limited the Minnesota Twins to six hits and one walk in eight innings of a 1-0 victory on Sunday, has won three straight vs. the Red Sox despite a 3-4 record vs. them.
Boston counters with Kason Gabbard (2-0, 5.79), who continues to fill in for injured starter Curt Schilling. The lefthander allowed three runs, three hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings in a 7-3 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday.
Gabbard, who has never faced Detroit, hopes to improve baseball's best team record. The Red Sox have won four of five.
