Webb, Diamondbacks try to stop skid, face Reds
Jul 7, 2007 - 2:14 PM Arizona (47-41) at Cincinnati (34-52), 7:10 pm EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) - The Arizona Diamondbacks turn to Brandon Webb to end a minor skid.
Webb and the Diamondbacks hope to avoid their fourth straight loss when they face the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday.
Arizona lost, 8-1, to Cincinnati on Friday to drop its third straight game. Micah Owings and two relievers were tagged for three homers, including a three-run blast to Ken Griffey Jr. It was the 586th for the future Hall of Famer, who tied Frank Robinson for sixth place on the all-time list.
The Diamondbacks turn to Webb (8-6, 3.27 ERA) to halt the slide. The 2006 Cy Young Award Winner allowed more than three runs for the first time in eight starts when the righthander surrendered five runs and seven hits in six-plus innings in an 11-3 loss to St. Louis on Monday.
However, Webb is 4-2 with a 2.50 ERA in seven career starts versus the Reds, including a complete-game 3-0 shutout on May 26, 2006, his last meeting vs. them.
Cincinnati counters with rookie Homer Bailey (2-2, 8.10).
Bailey (2-2, 8.10 ERA) was called up from Class AAA Louisville on June 8 and went 2-0 in his first three starts. Since then, however, the 21-year old righthander has suffered back-to-back defeats, including giving up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings in an 11-7 loss to St. Louis on Sunday.
In facing Arizona, Bailey will try to lead Cincinnati to its first three-game winning streak since May 28-30.
