Sale goes for ChiSox in Cleveland
Apr 13, 2013 - 1:44 PM (Sports Network) - Lefty Chris Sale makes his third start since signing a lucrative offseason contract extension when the Chicago White Sox visit Progressive Field for the second of three weekend games with the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.Sale began 2013 with a 1-0 defeat of the Kansas City Royals on April 1 and followed with a no-decision against Seattle six days later. In the two outings, he's allowed 12 hits and three runs with 14 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.
The 24-year-old was 17-8 last season and was rewarded for the success - which saw him place sixth in American League Cy Young Award voting - with a five- year deal worth $32.5 million, including $3.5 million this season.
Sale is 2-0 with three saves and a 2.10 ERA in 14 games with Cleveland.
He'll be opposed by Illinois-born righty Zach McAllister, who's unbeaten against the White Sox in three career starts with a 3.12 ERA.
Now 25, McAllister was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2006 and ultimately sent to Cleveland as part of the July 2010 trade that saw Austin Kearns wind up with the Yankees.
McAllister reached the big leagues a year later and made four starts, then emerged with 22 outings last year while winning six times and posting a 4.24 ERA across 125 1/3 innings.
His lone start of 2013 resulted in a 4-0 loss at Tampa Bay on April 5 after he allowed two earned runs and six hits in six innings.
On Friday, Nick Swisher hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Indians defeated the White Sox, 1-0.
The Indians recorded just three hits in the win.
Justin Masterson (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and a walk in his outing. In three starts this season, he has allowed just one run over 22 innings and has an ERA of 0.41.
"He's attacking the zone," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He's quick to the plate when the runner gets on. It was fun to watch."
Jose Quintana got the start for the White Sox, and he pitched seven innings of one-hit baseball. However, Jesse Crain (0-1) allowed the lone run and earned the loss.
"He was aggressive," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "He was getting ahead, he was painting. I think maybe the weather had a little bit to do, it's not an easy time to hit when it's cold, but pitchers like it and he was sharp."
Swisher's single came with two outs in the inning.
The White Sox won 11 of 18 games between the teams last season. Cleveland last won the season series in 2007.
