Sabathia was brilliant in beating the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, as he held them to just one earned run in eight innings. He also struck out nine without walking a batter and was aided by a triple play in the eighth inning to run his record to 2-1, while lowering his ERA to 2.25.
"I thought he was brilliant tonight," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of Sabathia, who was also on the mound for the Yankees' last triple play in 2010. "I thought he had a great sinker and a great changeup and a great slider tonight. I think that was probably the best stuff he's had all year, and that's encouraging as we go on."
Sabathia beat the Diamondbacks the only other time he faced them.
Arizona, meanwhile, will pin its hopes on righty Wade Miley, who is 2-0 with a 2.13 ERA. He beat the Pittsburgh Pirates last Wednesday, holding them to a pair of runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
"Threw the ball great," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "Moved it in and out good, had a good slider, a good changeup."
New York won Tuesday's opener, as Robinson Cano swatted a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning to carry the Yankees to a 4-2 victory.
Ivan Nova and four relievers successfully protected the lead after Cano's fourth long ball in six games, with Mariano Rivera throwing a perfect ninth to nail down the save in a matchup where both teams honored Jackie Robinson Day by wearing the number 42 on all players' jerseys.
Rivera, of course, is the only remaining active player still donning the number since it was retired throughout all of Major League Baseball in 1997. The Yankee closer announced prior to the season that he will retire at the campaign's conclusion.
Cano finished 2-for-4 and Nova (1-1) held Arizona to two runs while striking out six over the first five innings to help New York to its sixth win in seven games following a 1-4 season start.
"(Cano) got going and we got going as a team," Girardi said. "It seemed like when he started to get hot, our offense took off."
Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy (0-2), meanwhile, labored through four innings in which the right-hander permitted three runs on nine hits and threw 102 pitches.
Cody Ross went 2-for-4 with an RBI single to pace Arizona, which entered the set having won three of its last four outings.
Arizona also received some bad news on Tuesday when it learned that second baseman Aaron Hill would miss the next four-to-six weeks with a broken left hand.
