Santana attempts to remain perfect against Yankees

BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim starter Ervin Santana looks to continue his success against the New York Yankees when the teams meet in the finale of a three-game series on Sunday.

In four career starts against the Yankees, Santana (5-9, 5.35 ERA) is 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA. The 24-year-old righthander will be making his first start against the Yankees this season.

In his last start against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday, Santana struck out a career-high 11 batters though he ultimately took the loss in an 8-3 defeat.

The Yankees counter with Chien-Ming Wang (8-4, 3.58), who is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in two career starts against the Angels. The righthander is coming off a strong effort against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday, when he pitched seven scoreless innings during a 8-0 victory. In eight starts at Yankee Stadium this year, Wang is 5-3 with a 3.14 ERA.

Howie Kendrick scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by first baseman Miguel Cairo in the 13th inning as the Angels defeated the Yankees, 2-1, on Saturday.

In the loss, New York made five errors, marking the first time the team had done so since August 9, 2002 when they lost in 16-innings to the Oakland Athletics.

The Angels have won 19 of their last 28 games against the Yankees and have taken four of five meetings this season.
