Mariners edge Tigers in pitching duel

This time, however, the Seattle Mariners were on top, shutting down the Detroit Tigers, 2-0, on Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep.
Neither team found much success, until the seventh inning, when Kyle Seager and Endy Chavez each drove in one run on back-to-back hits. It was all the offense that was needed to grab the win.
Hisashi Iwakuma gave up just three hits and a walk over six innings for the Mariners, who lost in 14 innings against Detroit on Wednesday. Carter Capps (1-1) allowed two hits and a walk over two innings of relief to pick up the win. Tom Wilhelmsen pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Justin Verlander (2-2) got the start for the Tigers and fanned twelve over seven innings but the lack of run support prevented him from earning a win.
"I didn't quite make the pitches when I needed to in the seventh (inning)," said Verlander. "A little bit of it was bad pitch selection on my part, also bad execution."
With two outs in the seventh, Robert Andino hit a single. Seager then doubled, scoring Andino. Chavez followed with a single to bring Seager home.
"Against a guy like Verlander, in that kind of situation, you've got to be aggressive," said Seager. "It's good to just get up there and be ready to go. That's a big win for us as a team. It was a great job, once again, by our pitching staff, big win for us."
Game Notes
