Williams makes season debut for Mets

HOUSTON (Ticker) - Dave Williams makes his 2007 debut when the New York Mets visit the Houston Astros in the finale of a weekend series on Sunday.

Williams (NR) suffered a herniated disk early this season and spent six weeks in a neck brace before the lefthander could throw.

Williams posted a 3-1 mark with a 5.59 ERA in six appearances last season after coming over from the Cincinnati Reds via trade in May. However, he is just 1-3 against the Astros.

On Saturday, All-Star Carlos Beltran had the key hit in a two-run 17th inning after making a spectacular catch to end a threat three frames earlier as the Mets posted a 5-3 victory.

Houston ace Roy Oswalt (7-5, 3.52 ERA) goes in search of his first win since June 17. In his last start, the righthander gave up four runs and 10 hits in a no-decision vs. Philadelphia.

Oswalt has shined at homer this season, posting a 5-1 record with a 2.37 ERA in 12 starts. He has won both matchups against the Mets this season and is 4-3 all-time in the series.

On Thursday, Oswalt was picked to replaced injured Atlanta Braves starter John Smoltz, whose on the 15-day DL with shoulder inflammation, on the National League All-Star team.
