Marlins try give Slowey some support in Cincy
Apr 19, 2013 - 2:31 PMVideo
A first-year Marlin after signing an offseason free-agent deal, Slowey has seen his Miami teammates score just one run in his three starts while dropping two decisions in three Marlins losses.
He allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings of a 3-0 loss at Washington on April 3, gave up two runs in seven innings of a 2-0 loss to Atlanta on April 8, then got a no-decision in a 2-1 Miami loss to Philadelphia on April 14.
Slowey, who has never faced the Reds, is trying again for his first big-league win since 2010, which came via 4-2 decision over Oakland while he was a member of the Minnesota Twins en route to a 13-6 record.
Opposing him will be Florida-born righty Mat Latos, who also makes his fourth attempt at a first victory in 2013.
A 14-game winner in his first season with the Reds in 2012, Latos has allowed 10 runs on 20 hits through 19 1/3 innings in three starts. The Reds are 2-1 in games he's pitched.
Latos is 0-3 in five career starts against the Marlins while posting a 7.50 earned run average in 24 full innings. The ERA is his highest against any opponent other than St. Louis.
On Thursday, Todd Frazier hit a two-run home run and the Reds handled the Marlins with ease, 11-1.
Zach Cozart drove in two runs while Shin-Soo Choo, Xavier Paul, Devin Mesoraco and Chris Heisey had an RBI apiece for the Reds.
Cincinnati's Tony Cingrani (1-0), who made his major-league starting debut, allowed the lone run on five hits and three walks and had eight strikeouts in five innings.
Justin Ruggiano's solo shot provided the only offense for the Marlins, who saw starter Jose Fernandez (0-1) struggle, surrendering five runs on six hits and three walks over four innings.
"It's not going to be the last time," Fernandez said. "I'll just try to get better."
The teams have split their season series, 3-3, for each of the last two years. Cincinnati won five of the seven games played in 2010.
