Bonds to take hacks against Wellemeyer

Jul 8, 2007 - 1:21 PM San Francisco (38-47) at St Louis (39-45) 2:15 pm EDT

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) - Barry Bonds is set to make one more All-Star appearance in his storied career. Before that happens, he'll keep marching toward home run history, this time against Todd Wellemeyer.

Wellemeyer (2-1, 4.74 ERA) takes the mound on Sunday when the St. Louis Cardinals host the San Francisco Giants in the final game on the season's unofficial first half.

Bonds has no career at-bats against Wellemeyer, who was added to the Cardinals roster in May after being claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. The 28-year-old righthander has been converted to a starter by St. Louis pitching guru Dave Duncan, and has filled the role unconvincingly.

Wellemeyer is 2-1 with a 5.19 ERA in seven starts, but has yet to make it past the sixth inning while making the move from the bullpen.

Bonds is hitting .316 with 13 of his 17 homers coming against righthanders this season. He is currently four homers shy of tying Hank Aaron's all-time mark of 755 homers.

The Giants will send the disappointing Barry Zito (6-8, 4.65) to the hill. The lefthander, who signed a seven-year, $126 million free-agent contract in the offseason, is winless in five starts since June 3.

Zito's biggest problem has been an inability to find the plate. The 29-year-old has issued 48 walks in 100 2/3 innings this season.

San Francisco will be going for a sweep of the three-game set after claiming one-run victories on Friday and Saturday.
