Zimmermann, Nats eye series win over Mets

Apr 21, 2013 - 12:35 PM (Sports Network) - Jordan Zimmermann aims to keep his perfect record intact Sunday afternoon when the Washington Nationals meet the New York Mets in the rubber match of a three-game series.

The Nationals have won 13 of their last 15 games at Citi Field, including Saturday's 7-6 triumph. Bryce Harper's second home run of the day broke a tie in the eighth inning.

Harper supplied a two-run shot earlier in the contest and went 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Adam LaRoche clubbed a three-run homer and Rafael Soriano notched his sixth save to help the Nationals bounce back from a 7-1 loss to New York on Friday.

Gio Gonzalez lasted just four frames after giving up five runs in his last inning of work, but four Washington relievers yielded one run on two hits the rest of the way, with Tyler Clippard (1-0) picking up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings.

John Buck's RBI double in the seventh tied it at 6-6 before Josh Edgin (0-1) served up Harper's go-ahead homer. New York starter Jeremy Hefner allowed three runs on four hits with three walks over four innings of work.

Justin Turner and Collin Cowgill each had a two-run single, while Daniel Murphy and John Buck added an RBI apiece in the setback.

"Its disappointing, you get five off Gio (Gonzalez), we got to win that game," said Mets third baseman David Wright.

There was bad news for the Nationals following the game. Nats manager Davey Johnson said third baseman Ryan Zimmerman was headed to the disabled list with a hamstring injury.

With Zimmerman out, the Nats recalled top prospect Anthony Rendon from Double- A Harrisburg. He is expected to start today's game and hit .375 with four homers and 11 RBI during an impressive Spring Training.

The 22-year-old is hitting .292 with a pair of homers and seven RBI in 14 games with Harrisburg this season.

Zimmermann was outstanding in his last start. The right-hander tossed a complete game at Miami on Monday for his third win in as many starts to this season. He's 3-2 with a 3.00 ERA in 11 games against the Mets.

Dillon Gee is going in the opposite direction, as the righty is coming off a loss at Colorado on Tuesday. He gave up seven hits and five runs in 4 2/3 innings. Gee is 3-1 in six games versus the Nationals.
