Mariners blank Angels
Apr 26, 2013 - 7:14 AM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Brandon Maurer struck out six over 6 1/3 stellar innings, as the Seattle Mariners downed the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, 6-0, on Thursday in the opener of a four-game set at Safeco Field.Maurer (2-3) scattered seven hits and walked one to earn his second victory in his last three tries. Carter Capps and Tom Wilhelmsen combined to keep the Angels off the basepaths over the final 2 2/3 frames.
"Maurer really set the tone and threw a great ball game. He did a great job of executing pitches. He was down when he wanted it to be down, he was elevated when he wanted it to be elevated," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said.
Kyle Seager scorched a two-run homer and knocked in three overall, while Carlos Peguero smacked a solo shot and Jason Bay added a pair of RBI for the Mariners, who had lost two straight and five of their last six coming in.
Garrett Richards (1-1) absorbed the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks over seven-plus innings for the Halos, who have lost two straight and three of their last four games.
"I thought Garrett [Richards] pitched much better than his line scores will show," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of his starter. "He had a chance to put some hitters away but he wasn't able to do it early."
Peguero put the Mariners on the board in the third when he launched a leadoff blast deep over the wall in center field.
Bay and Endy Chavez followed with back-to-back singles around a Robert Andino fly out before Seager smoked a line drive to center to score Bay for a 2-0 lead.
Bay's bases-loaded single in the seventh doubled the Mariners' advantage, as the Seattle left fielder singled to left to score Justin Smoak and Dustin Ackley.
Chavez then led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to chase Richards from the contest. Nick Maronde entered and Seager belted his fourth pitch over the right-field wall to give Seattle a 6-0 lead.
Game Notes
Peguero's homer traveled an estimated 451 feet, making it the third longest home run at Safeco Field ... Seager extended his hitting streak to 14 games ... LA went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position and left five on base.
