Kendrick goes the distance as Phils blank Mets

Apr 27, 2013 - 4:26 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Kyle Kendrick went the distance on a three- hitter for his second career shutout, and Ryan Howard belted a three-run homer in Philadelphia's 4-0 win over the New York Mets.

Kendrick (2-1) walked one and had five strikeouts for his third career complete game. He threw 73 of his 107 pitches for strikes.

"I really just wanted to get strike one," Kendrick said. "Most of the night I was able to do that."

Michael Young had an RBI single for the Phillies, who snapped a three-game skid.

Dillon Gee (1-4) allowed seven hits and all four runs for the Mets, who lost their second in a row.

Laynce Nix doubled to start the third inning when Mets right fielder Mike Baxter lost the ball in the lights, but Gee retired the next three batters.

Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley singled to start the sixth to put runners at the corners. Young followed with a single to left field, and Howard then got hold of a 1-1 pitch and deposited it over the wall in right-center field for his third homer of the year.

"I felt pretty good tonight," Gee said. "I felt in control, then all of a sudden I just had three balls I wish I could have back. It would be a different story."

Kendrick was cruising along. The right-hander retired 10 in a row until pinch- hitter Justin Turner singled with two outs in the eighth inning. Baxter then flied out to center.

Kendrick had a 1-2-3 ninth inning to close the opener of this three-game series.
