Phillies use five-run fifth to beat Mets

Apr 28, 2013 - 12:07 AM Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Domonic Brown and John Mayberry, Jr. clubbed back-to-back homers to highlight a five-run fifth inning that helped lift the Philadelphia Phillies to a 9-4 win over the New York Mets in the middle test of a three-game series at Citi Field.

Ryan Howard drove in two runs for the Phillies, while starter Jonathan Pettibone (1-0) picked up his first major league win in his second career start. Pettibone gave up three runs on seven hits and walked two in five innings.

"It seems to me when he fell behind he made pretty good pitches and got out of it," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "When he got ahead in the count he was having some problems."

David Wright went 2-for-4 with one RBI for New York, which was shut down by Kyle Kendrick in Friday's series opener, managing just three hits -- all singles -- in a 4-0 loss.

Shaun Marcum (0-1) came off the 15-day disabled list to make his Mets debut against the Phillies. Signed to a one-year contract in January, Marcum had been sidelined with a neck injury.

The right-hander departed after four frames, replaced by Robert Carson with the Mets down 3-2.

"I felt like I had a lot more left in me," Marcum said of his short outing.

Jimmy Rollins greeted the New York reliever with a leadoff double, and things only got worse for Carson.

After Michael Young worked a one-out walk, Howard singled home Rollins before Brown launched a three-run blast to right-center field. Mayberry drove Carson's next pitch over the left-field wall.

Wright brought home Ruben Tejada with a double in the bottom of the fifth, but the Phillies regained their six-run cushion on Laynce Nix's RBI single two innings later. Nix's two-out hit scored Young, who had led off with a single and advanced to third when right fielder Mike Baxter dropped a ball hit by Howard.

John Buck's leadoff homer off Jeremy Horst in the ninth was the only hit New York mustered against the Philadelphia bullpen.

Back-to-back two-out doubles by Ike Davis and Jordany Valdespin gave the Mets a 1-0 lead in the second.

Philadelphia then tagged Marcum for three runs in the third. Pettibone opened the frame with his first big league hit and scored the tying run on a ground- rule double to left-center by Chase Utley.

Rollins, who matched Pettibone with a base hit, then scored on a wild pitch. Utley took third on the errant offering and hustled home on Howard's sacrifice fly to left.

The Mets threatened to put up a crooked number, loading the bases with nobody out in the fourth. Pettibone, however, limited the damage to one run on a Davis sac fly.

Game Notes

The Phillies' nine runs were a season high ... Howard now has a nine-game hitting streak ... Young finished with three hits ... Philadelphia has won five straight at Citi Field ... To make room for Marcum, who allowed five hits and walked two, the Mets optioned pitcher Josh Edgin to Double-A Binghamton.
