Kevin Youkilis, who has been hampered by a bad back, became the latest Yankee on the disabled list on Tuesday, as he joined Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, Alex Rodriguez, Francisco Cervelli and Ivan Nova on the shelf. New York, though, still chugged along, as Travis Hafner went 3-for-4 with three RBI, Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven scoreless innings and the Yankees rolled to a 7-4 win.
Kuroda (4-1) battled through a shaky start and retired 14 of the final 15 batters he faced. He gave up four hits and four walks while fanning eight as New York took its fifth win in six games.
Lyle Overbay smacked a solo homer, Chris Stewart went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Eduardo Nunez had three hits and scored a run as the Yankees knocked around Philip Humber (0-6), who was tagged for four runs on nine hits in six innings to lose his sixth consecutive outing to begin the season.
"Eventually the balls are going to bounce my way," Humber said. "Hopefully it happens soon, I'm getting a little bit frustrated."
Chris Carter belted a two-run homer and Jose Altuve went 2-for-5 with two RBI to highlight Houston's offense.
David Phelps takes the ball for New York on Tuesday in his first start of the season. Phelps, filling in for the injured Nova, has made six relief appearances for the Yankees this season and is 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA.
"You look, and we've been fighting all year," Phelps said after picking up the win on Friday against Toronto in relief of Nova. "We've got a scrappy bunch, guys that have been around and have fought a lot of their careers. We're going to win games in a lot of different ways."
Houston, meanwhile, will counter with lefty Erik Bedard, who is 0-2 with a 7.98 ERA. Bedard absorbed the loss on Friday in Boston, as he was rocked for five runs and eight hits in just three innings.
Bedard is 4-5 lifetime versus the Yankees with a 4.32 ERA in 13 games (12 starts).
Houston has beaten the Yankees just twice in 11 meetings, including a 2-5 mark in the Bronx. Houston's first win over the Yankees was a six-pitcher no- hitter at the old Yankee Stadium on June 11, 2003.
