Feldman shines as Cubs defeat Padres

May 2, 2013 - 3:06 AM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Scott Feldman pitched his first career complete game and set a personal best with 12 strikeouts as the Chicago Cubs topped the San Diego Padres, 6-2, at Wrigley Field.

Feldman (2-3) gave up homers to Jedd Gyorko and Chase Headley among the three San Diego hits. The right-hander walked just one batter and contributed an RBI double.

Dioner Navarro had a two-run double for the Cubs, who bounced back from a 13-7 loss Tuesday.

Former Cub Andrew Cashner (1-2) allowed six hits and five runs -- four earned -- over four innings, as the Padres lost for just the second time in their last seven games.

"Cash just wasn't on tonight. He couldn't get any momentum started," Padres manager Bud Black said. "There was no consistency there. He could never get in a groove."

Starlin Castro's single into center field plated Julio Bourbon in the opening inning in the third portion of this four-game series.

Feldman's double to the right field corner scored Darwin Barney in the second, and the righty went back to the mound with great success the following two innings. Feldman struck out the side in the third and fourth frames.

"That was actually a big hit at that time to get things going," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said of Feldman's double.

Navarro's two-bagger to the gap in right-center field scored Anthony Rizzo and Castro in the third, and Bourbon came home on Luis Valbuena's groundout in the fourth for a 5-0 cushion.

Castro singled with one out in the seventh and scored on a Nate Schierholtz double.

Gyorko started the eighth with his first career homer, a shot to left-center field. Headley homered to right with one out in the ninth, but Sveum left Feldman in to finish the job he started.

"It's been something I've wanted to do for a while," Feldman said of his first complete game. "Originally the plan was for me to throw eight. I went back and asked skip if I could throw a CG and thankfully he didn't take me out."

Game Notes

The Cubs have won five of their last seven contests ... Feldman's previous career-high of 11 strikeouts came Aug. 23, 2009 at Tampa Bay when he pitched for Texas ... Feldman threw 80 of his 114 pitches for strikes.
