O's continue road trip in Anaheim

May 2, 2013 - 3:36 PM (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles try to get back on track on their lengthy 11-game road trip and will begin a four-game series Thursday against the LA Angels of Anaheim.

The Orioles opened the trek by taking three of four in Oakland, but lost two of three matchups with Seattle, including Wednesday's 8-3 setback in the series finale from Safeco Field.

Wei-Yin Chen didn't have his best stuff on the hill for the Orioles and was dealt the loss for permitting five runs and eight runs in four innings. Chen tossed eight shutout innings the previous time out on Friday at the A's.

"From outstanding to the worst tonight," Chen said through his interpreter. "I tried to attack the zone today. I tried to throw first-pitch strikes. But I tried to think too much, I tried to attack both sides of the plate and it didn't work at all."

Manny Machado went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored, while Nick Markakis and Adam Jones each had two hits and an RBI for Baltimore, which had won nine of the last 13 contests and is 4-3 on the long trek.

Chris Tillman is coming off his first win of the season and gets the nod for the O's in Thursday's series opener with the Halos. Tillman struck out seven and allowed two runs in six innings of a 7-3 win at Oakland on Saturday. He is now 1-1 with a 4.73 earned run average in five starts.

Tillman faced the Angels for the only time in a 16-6 blowout win at Camden Yards back on Aug. 14, 2009, when he lasted 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs -- three earned -- and seven hits. The right-hander was a rookie back then.

Meanwhile, the Angels just went 2-5 on a recent road trip, which culminated with Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Athletics in the finale of a three-game series by the Bay.

C.J. Wilson fanned five and held the A's to a pair of runs in 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0. Ernesto Frieri threw the finale 1 2/3 innings for his fourth save.

"Whoever we're playing, we need wins," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "We have to focus on what the process is to get there."

Mike Trout, Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick all homered for Anaheim, which ended a four-game slide and had lost six of seven.

Joe Blanton goes for his first win in an Angels uniform and is 0-4 with a lofty 7.09 ERA in five starts. He previously toed the rubber in Saturday's 3-2 setback at Seattle and gave up all three runs and nine hits in six innings.

Blanton, who has given up at least three runs in every start this season, is 2-2 with a 5.36 ERA in seven career starts against the Orioles.

The Angels and Orioles are meeting for the first time since Anaheim won seven of nine matchups in 2012. The Angels are 13-5 in the last 18 meetings between the two ballclubs.
