Guthrie breaks KC record in shutout of White Sox
May 5, 2013 - 3:19 AMVideo
Guthrie (4-0) allowed just four hits and a walk to get his first career shutout. He has gone 17 straight starts without earning a loss going back to last season, breaking the franchise record set by Paul Splittorf in 1977-78.
"It's something I've never been able to accomplish," said Guthrie. "I had a few opportunities. Going out there in the ninth inning and hearing that little roar from the crowd was really cool to back me up. We played great defense early that made it all possible."
Lorenzo Cain hit a two-run triple in the first and it was all the offense the Royals needed to get the win, their third straight.
White Sox starter Dylan Axelrod (0-2) gave up two runs on eight hits and a walk over 7 2/3 frames.
Cain's two-RBI triple scored Billy Butler and Eric Hosmer. Butler was hit by a pitch with two outs and Hosmer followed with a single.
The White Sox had an opportunity to score in the fourth. With two outs, Adam Dunn drew a walk and Paul Konerko hit a double to put runners in scoring position. However, Conor Gillaspie struck out to end the inning.
Guthrie then retired 10 straight batters before allowing a single by Tyler Flowers in the eighth. Two batters later, he gave up a single by Alejandro De Aza, but that would be Chicago's last hit of the game.
"When you've got a guy that has that many pitches and also locates a really good fastball, you can't go on guessing with a guy like him," said Dunn. "He'll use any pitch in any count and he's good. He's good."
Game Notes
The Royals were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base ... The White Sox had a 11-game home run streak snapped ... Hosmer was 3- for-4 with a triple, his first since July 24, 2012, against the Angels.
