Wieters lifts Orioles over Royals
May 8, 2013 - 5:16 AMVideo
Wieters ended with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in for the Orioles, who have won three in a row. Adam Jones had an RBI and two runs scored.
Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen allowed two runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. Tommy Hunter (2-1) tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win.
"When you don't walk people and you catch the baseball the way we did tonight, you give yourself a chance to win those types of games," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Alex Gordon hit a two-run homer for the Royals, who have dropped two straight since winning four in a row. Alcides Escobar added an RBI.
Ervin Santana got the start for Kansas City and gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings. Tim Collins (1-1) allowed one unearned run over 1 1/3 innings of relief to take the loss.
Trailing 3-1, Kansas City scored twice in the seventh to tie the game. After Miguel Tejada hit a one-out single, the game was delayed by 48 minutes due to rain. Once play resumed, Gordon cleared the wall in right for his fourth of the season.
The Orioles took the lead back in the eighth after Jones walked, moved to second on Luke Hochevar's throwing error and raced home on Wieters' double down the left-field line.
"The leadoff walk is something that is going to get you in trouble just about every time," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "Especially in a late game, and especially when you're facing hitters as productive as the Baltimore hitters."
Jim Johnson pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his 12th save of the season.
Baltimore scored three times in the first inning. Manny Machado, Nick Markakis and Jones hit three straight singles to plate a run. Wieters followed with a two-run double to right-center field two batters later.
The Royals got on the board in the third. Tejada and Elliot Johnson hit back- to-back singles with one out. Escobar drove in Tejada with a two-out single to right.
Kansas City put men on first and third with one out in the fifth, but Escobar grounded into a double play to end the threat.
