Reds rely on Arroyo, shoot for sweep of Brewers

May 12, 2013 - 2:54 PM (Sports Network) - Veteran right-hander Bronson Arroyo can pitch the Cincinnati Reds to a series sweep and end a four-start winless drought when they host the Milwaukee Brewers to wrap up a three-game weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

The Reds took a 2-0 series lead on Saturday, when Jay Bruce ripped two doubles and his third home run of the season and the hosts used a seven-run third inning to get past the Brewers, 13-7.

Already leading 5-4, the Reds tallied five doubles and seven hits overall in the decisive third inning. Bruce, Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco all doubled around an Xavier Paul walk with no outs, plating the first two runs.

Starting pitcher Mat Latos then helped himself with an RBI single up the middle. Shin-Soo Choo followed with a double to score Mesoraco and Zach Cozart brought Latos home with a sacrifice fly to center for the first out of the inning.

Joey Votto kept the rally going with an RBI single and following Brandon Phillips' pop up to right, Bruce doubled again to cap the scoring barrage.

Frazier, Paul and Mesoraco all had two hits apiece and combined for seven runs scored for Cincinnati, which won its major league best 15th home game.

Latos (4-0) labored through six innings, allowing seven runs -- six earned -- on nine hits and three walks but took the win and helped himself at the dish, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Latos has won eight straight decisions going back to last season.

"I gave up six runs today, actually seven," said Latos. "I could care less how many hits I had."

His counterpart, Hiram Burgos (1-1), struggled through three innings in the fourth start of his major league career. Burgos was smacked around for 12 runs -- 10 earned -- on 11 hits before giving way to the Brewers' bullpen.

"It was the worst outing of my career," claimed Burgos.

Jean Segura went 4-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and a steal while Ryan Braun extended his hitting streak to 12 games with his seventh double of the year. Norichika Aoki also went deep for the Brewers, losers in eight of nine.

Arroyo, who turned 36 in February, is 13-10 in 29 career meetings against the Brewers with a 3.90 earned run average across 168 1/3 innings.

He opened 2013 with two wins in his initial three starts through April 15, but has since gone 0-3 with a no-decision while allowing 29 hits and 14 runs -- 13 earned -- in 26 innings of work.

He dropped a 7-4 decision to Atlanta in his most recent start on May 6, when he was tagged for four runs on eight hits in five innings.

Arroyo is 45-40 in 119 career starts at Great American Ball Park.

For the Brewers, streaking right-hander Wily Peralta aims for a fourth win in his last five starts.

The Dominican, who turned 24 years old last week, was 0-1 with two no- decisions in his initial three starts of the season, but has subsequently gone 3-1 in his last four while dropping his earned run average from 6.19 to 5.54.

He was a 6-3 winner over Texas in his most recent start on May 7 after allowing two earned runs on five hits in six innings.

He got a no-decision in one career start against the Reds after allowing two hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Reds won nine of 15 games with the Brewers in 2012 and the teams split their series, 8-8, in 2011. Milwaukee hasn't won the season series since 2006.
