Angels go for rare sweep of White Sox

May 12, 2013 - 3:06 PM (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim will take aim at just their second series sweep of the season on Sunday when they battle the Chicago White Sox in a primetime showdown.

The Angels pulled out a 7-5 victory on Friday night and followed that up with a 3-2 win over Chicago on Saturday, their third straight triumph.

All the scoring came early on in the contest. Mike Trout hit a two-run home run in the first inning as the Angels got out to a quick lead. The White Sox then tied the game, 2-2, with a pair of RBI singles in the second inning. The last bit of scoring came in the third inning when Albert Pujols scored what turned out to be the winning run on a passed ball.

Jerome Williams got the win for the Angels as he pitched into the seventh inning and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out three batters. Scott Downs and Garrett Richards each earned holds for Los Angeles and Ernesto Frieri picked up his seventh save and third in as many days.

The Angels' only sweep of the season was April 19-21 against Detroit.

Unfortunately for White Sox starter Jose Quintana his quality start (six innings, two earned runs, five strikeouts) was wasted as he took the loss, the third in the last four games for the White Sox.

Making the start for the Angels on Sunday will be left-hander C.J. Wilson, who is coming off his first loss of the season.

Wilson allowed seven runs on as many hits in 6 1/3 innings in a 7-6 loss to Houston this past Tuesday. However, only two of the runs Wilson surrendered were earned as he also set a season-high with 12 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the three errors committed by the Angels in the contest wasted what was an otherwise strong effort.

Wilson's ERA had been hovering around 4.00 for much of the season before that game. As it stands now he is 3-1 with an ERA of 3.86. Wilson has also been consistent in terms of how far he has gotten into games as he has pitched six but no more than 6 1/3 innings in all but one game.

Before becoming a full-time starter with Texas, Wilson was used primarily as a reliever which explains why he has faced Chicago 13 times in his career but only three times as a starter. Overall, Wilson is 3-1 with a sparkling ERA of 2.64 against the White Sox.

Staff ace Chris Sale will make his way to the mound on Sunday for Chicago as he makes his eighth start of the season.

The first seven have gone well enough for Sale, who is 3-2 with an ERA of 3.42 through those starts. Sale's strikeout rate is down a bit from last season when he struck out an even nine batters per nine innings. This season he has struck out 42 batters in 47 1/3 innings of work.

Though he did not factor in the decision in his most recent start, Sale still had a game to be proud of. The left-hander finished 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits against Kansas City. The White Sox still captured the 2-1 victory against the Royals and improved to 5-2 in games in which Sale has started.

Sale has made only one start against the Angels previously, but has pitched in three separate games against them. In those three appearances, which have totaled 7 1/3 innings, Sale is 1-0 with an ERA of 1.23.
