Orioles, Twins wrap up series at Target Field

May 12, 2013 - 3:06 PM (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins will wrap up a three-game series on Sunday afternoon when they meet up in the rubber match at Target Field.

Baltimore rallied from a 6-0 deficit to take a 9-6 victory in 10 innings on Friday night. However, on Saturday, Minnesota was the team that rallied from an early hole to capture an 8-5 win.

The Orioles put three runs on the board in the first inning, but thanks to three hits apiece from Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau, the Twins scored eight runs spread across the third, fourth and sixth innings to earn the win. Ryan Doumit was 1-for-3 in the contest with his hit being a two-run home run in the sixth that gave the Twins some breathing room.

Vance Worley picked up his first win of the season after getting the start for the Twins. The right-hander didn't pitch particularly well, allowing five runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. However, the Twins' bullpen didn't allow a run in the final 3 2/3 innings -- highlighted by a perfect ninth from Jared Burton, who finished the game for his first save of the season.

The win was the fourth in the last five games for the Twins.

In his season debut, Steve Johnson took the loss for Baltimore after allowing six runs on seven hits and four walks in four innings as the starter.

Manny Machado went 3-for-5 for the Orioles and Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters each had a pair of hits, including Wieters' home run in the fourth inning, his fifth of the season.

Looking for his third win of the season will be Wei-Yin Chen as he gets the start for the Orioles in Sunday's matinee.

Chen has been doing a good job of replicating the success he had during his rookie season a year ago. The 27-year-old lefty hasn't been putting up great numbers in the win column at 2-3, but his ERA of 3.40 has still been steady and is more than a half run below his effort last season (4.02).

When he faced Kansas City in his last start, Chen was tagged for a season-high nine hits and still recorded a quality start by limiting the damage to two runs over 6 1/3 innings of work. Chen has kept opponents to two runs or fewer in four of his seven starts this season.

This will be just the second start of Chen's career against Minnesota. In his first ever appearance against the Twins last season, Chen tossed seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five.

Along with Kevin Correia, Scott Diamond has been the most consistently effective pitcher in Minnesota's rotation and will look to keep that going when he makes the start on Sunday.

Diamond is in just his third Major League season, but looks like he may just be an arm the Twins will rely on for years to come. He is 3-2 with an ERA of 3.03 on this campaign, which comes on the heels of his 12-9, 3.54 ERA effort in 2012.

Consistency has been the key for Diamond this season as he has been almost a lock to pitch six quality innings when he takes the mound. In his last start, Diamond pitched seven scoreless innings to pick up his second straight win in as many outings. He has now pitched at least six innings in four of his five starts this season.

Diamond has just one career start against Baltimore and it is likely one he'd like to forget. In that outing, Diamond allowed five runs on nine hits over six innings of work though he did get the win.

Minnesota won two of three meetings in Baltimore April 5-7.
