Corbin heads to hill for D'backs in Atlanta

May 14, 2013 - 2:45 PM (Sports Network) - Patrick Corbin, not former All-Star Ian Kennedy, leads the Arizona Diamondbacks in wins. Corbin looks to add to that list when the D'backs resume a three-game series Tuesday versus the Atlanta Braves.

While Kennedy, a 15-game winner in 2012, sits with just one win, Corbin is 5-0 with a 1.75 earned run average in seven starts. In all seven of his starts this season, Corbin has lasted at least six innings and given up two runs or fewer. In a 2-1 win over Philadelphia on Thursday, Corbin was reached for just a run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

"Obviously it's exciting," Corbin said of his success. "But I just want to keep level-headed and make sure I don't get too big on myself. I'm just glad we came out with a win, we have a nice little streak going."

The left-handed Corbin has won his last three starts and all three of his home assignments, pitching 19 innings at Chase Field with a 1.42 ERA. Corbin threw three shutout innings of one-hit ball in relief against the Braves last June in his only appearance in this series.

Braves starter Julio Teheran also sports an unbeaten record, but it's not as glamorous as Corbin's. Teheran is 2-0 with a 4.84 earned run average in six starts and draws pitching duties Tuesday.

Teheran won his latest outing on Thursday in a 6-3 win at San Francisco and pitched at least seven innings for the second time in three outings. He allowed three runs and did not walk a batter, and has yielded three runs or less in each of his past three starts.

Giants catcher and reigning NL MVP Buster Posey was impressed with Teheran, who altered his grip on the ball, especially for changeups.

"He stayed on the corners pretty well," Posey said. "He wasn't making too many mistakes on the plate."

Atlanta has won all six of the Colombian right-hander's starts. Teheran is 2-0 in four road appearances and did not figure into the decision of a 5-4 loss at Arizona on May 18, 2011. He lasted four innings and gave up two runs in his only appearance against the D'backs.

The Braves took the opener of this series in convincing fashion by posting a 10-1 victory over the D'backs. In Justin Upton's return to the desert, he went 4-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Upton, of course, was traded to the Braves in the offseason after playing his first six seasons with Arizona.

"To come out and get four hits, its always a good feeling," Upton said.

Brian McCann and Chris Johnson also homered and finished with three RBI for Atlanta, which halted a three-game losing streak. Mike Minor earned the win by holding the hosts to a run in 6 2/3 innings.

Atlanta is 4-4 on a 10-game road trip and one game ahead of Washington for the top spot in the NL East. In injury news for the Braves, outfielder B.J. Upton is day-to-day after taking a pitch off of his left shoulder. Upton was hit by a Wade Miley pitch in the sixth inning and was replaced in the seventh inning.

"I was initially good and I was alright on defense," Upton said on the club's website. "I just went to swing a bat and it was (tight)."

The Diamondbacks have lost three in a row since winning five straight and didn't get much assistance from Miley, who was tagged for seven runs -- six earned -- in five innings.

"I just started missing up," said Miley. "Earlier in the game I was hitting spots, was pitching down in the zone and then just like that, I couldn't get outs anymore."

Paul Goldschmidt homered for the D'backs, who are now 2 1/2 games off the lead in the NL West. with a less-than-stellar 12.71 ERA.

Arizona lost five of seven meetings with the Braves a season ago and nine of the previous 11 matchups between the two clubs.
