Arroyo, Reds go for fifth straight win against Mets
Jul 12, 2007 - 1:27 PM Cincinnati (36-52) at NY Mets (48-39) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Bronson Arroyo takes the mound as the Cincinnati Reds hope to win their fifth consecutive game when they face the New York Mets in the opener of a four-game series Thursday.
It would be the longest winning streak of the season for the Reds, who have lost four of their last five games on the road.
Arroyo (3-9, 4.84 ERA) recorded his first win since May 6 in his last start, surrendering three runs and seven hits with four strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a 6-3 triumph over the San Francisco Giants last Thursday.
The 30-year-old righthander has posted a 2-1 record with a 4.40 ERA in four career games against the Mets.
He will be opposed by Orlando Hernandez (4-4, 3.22), who has won just once in his last six starts.
Hernandez pitched just four innings, yielding six runs - five earned - and six hits with six walks and two strikeouts in a 17-7 loss to the Colorado Rockies on July 4.
The Mets, who had shortstop Jose Reyes, third baseman David Wright and outfielder Carlos Beltran all start in the All-Star Game, enter losing six of their previous eight contests.
During that span, New York has been outscored, 56-29.
