D'backs rely on Miley in Miami finale
May 19, 2013 - 1:27 PM (Sports Network) - Wade Miley hopes his past success against the Miami Marlins will help him forget about his worst start of the season thus far when he leads Arizona against them to close a three-game series.Miley gave up six hits and seven runs -- six earned -- in five-plus innings of a loss to the Atlanta Braves on Monday. The left-hander, though, is 2-0 and has yet to allow an earned run in 14 1/3 innings in a pair of starts against the Marlins.
Ricky Nolasco will try to bounce back from his fifth loss of the season Sunday when he counters for the offensively-challenged Marlins. The righty has lost three consecutive starts, during which the Marlins have been outscored 11-3.
He's 5-2 with a 4.62 ERA in eight career games when facing the Diamondbacks.
Last night, Brandon McCarthy tossed his third career shutout and got his first win since undergoing emergency brain surgery, in Arizona's 1-0 win.
On Sept. 5, 2012, as a member of the Athletics, McCarthy (1-3) took a line drive to the head off the bat of Erick Aybar and suffered an epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and a skull fracture. He underwent surgery that night and was discharged six days later, but didn't pitch for the rest of the season.
McCarthy, making his ninth start of the season, allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out five, as the Diamondbacks won their fourth straight game. It was his seventh career complete game.
"The wins for us is the only thing I care about at all," McCarthy said. "My stats is really inconsequential."
Gerardo Parra hit a home run to right field off the first pitch thrown by Marlins starter Tom Koehler (0-2), who allowed just two more hits and fanned seven over six frames.
"He looked really good, threw some nice breaking balls, other than that first pitch," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
The Marlins have lost seven straight games.
The Diamondbacks won six of nine games over the Marlins in 2012 and five of seven in 2011. The teams split six games in 2010.
