Phillies stun Reds with ninth-inning comeback
May 20, 2013 - 1:00 AM Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Erik Kratz and Freddy Galvis each homered off of Aroldis Chapman in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Citizens Bank Park.Homer Bailey baffled Philadelphia hitters with seven scoreless innings, but saw his effort ruined after Kratz, who took over at catcher when Carlos Ruiz left in the third inning with an apparent hamstring injury, took Chapman (3-2) deep to left on a 3-2 count to tie the score.
The next man up was Galvis, who also sent a Chapman offering over the fence in left to lift the Phillies to a series victory and fifth win in seven tries overall.
"I saw a heater and felt I hit it good," said Galvis. "First time in my life. I'll never forget it."
Bailey, who gave up five hits and a walk, hurled a gem against the Phils earlier this year as well, when he struck out 10 and yielded just two hits in eight innings in a 1-0 Reds' victory on Apr. 16.
"It is an unfortunate way for it to end," Reds manager Dusty Baker lamented.
Antonio Bastardo (2-1) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth in relief of rookie Jonathan Pettibone, who allowed two runs -- one earned -- in seven strong innings.
"Today's game was definitely a pick me up," said Phils manager Charlie Manuel. "It'll give us a nice little ride down to Florida. Much better than if we'd lost."
Jay Bruce put the Reds on the board when he led off the top of the second with a no-doubter to center field.
Pettibone, who allowed baserunners in six of seven innings, retired the Reds in order in the fifth, breaking a streak of 15 straight frames without a 1-2-3 inning for Phillies pitchers.
Todd Frazier added to the Reds lead with a double off the wall in right, plating Joey Votto. Votto finished the series with four runs scored, two home runs and three RBI on 8-for-12.
The Phillies put a run across in the eighth to get within one. With two outs and no one on, Ben Revere beat out an infield hit and stole second off Jonathan Broxton. After Michael Young drew a walk, the Reds sent in lefty Sean Marshall to face Chase Utley, and Utley made him pay with an RBI single to left-center.
Game Notes
Revere went 3-for-4 with a double ... Utley's single snapped a 16 2/3 innings scoreless streak for the Phillies ... Philadelphia improved to 3-7 against teams from Ohio ... Ruiz saw his 9-game hitting streak come to an end after grounding into a fielder's choice in his only at-bat ... Chapman has blown consecutive saves for the second time in his career.
