Red Sox hope to bounce back against White Sox

May 21, 2013 - 2:52 PM (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox aim to get even with the Chicago White Sox when the two clubs resume a three-game set Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Red Sox dropped a 6-4 decision in Monday's series opener, as ace Jon Lester (6-1) lost his first start of the season after he surrendered six runs -- five earned -- and seven hits in six innings.

"It was bound to (end) sometime," Lester said after his unbeaten streak came to an end. "It is what it is. Felix (Doubront) will pick me up tomorrow, throw better than I did tonight and give us a chance to win the game and hopefully start a new streak."

Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered and both he and Will Middlebrooks finished with a pair of runs batted in for Boston, which had won five in a row and is still a dominant 5-2 on a nine-game road trip.

Boston's loss last night dropped the club 1 1/2 games behind the rival New York Yankees for the AL East lead.

As Lester mentioned before, Doubront will try to pick up his rotation mate when he toes the rubber Tuesday. Doubront is 0-1 in his last three appearances and posted his second straight no-decision Thursday in a 4-3 win at Tampa Bay. He gave up two runs in five innings in that one and is 3-1 with a 6.03 earned run average in seven games (6 starts) this season.

The left-hander has won both of his starts against the White Sox.

Chicago got its eight-game homestand off to a good start Monday thanks to six strong innings from starter Dylan Axelrod. Axelrod allowed two runs and four hits, while Addison Reed worked around a hit in the ninth for his 15th save.

Adam Dunn hit a three-run home run in the first inning.

"It's nice to jump out to a lead and hold on to it," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

The White Sox were able to stop a two-game slide and won for the fifth time in their last eight tries.

Toeing the rubber for the Pale Hose Tuesday will be Jose Quintana, who is 2-1 with a 3.97 ERA in eight starts. Quintana allowed four runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings in Thursday's 5-4 win at Anaheim and did not receive a decision.

Quintana, a left-hander, threw eight scoreless innings in a his only start against the Red Sox last July 19 in a 3-1 loss. He did not record a decision in that one.

The Red Sox have won eight of their past 11 versus the White Sox, going 5-2 in Chicago over that span.
