Series up for grabs when D'Backs, Rox play rubber match at Coors

May 22, 2013 - 2:13 PM (Sports Network) - A series victory is on the line Wednesday afternoon for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies. It will also be a rubber match of sorts between starters Trevor Cahill and Jorge De La Rosa.

Cahill hopes to stay hot as the Diamondbacks wrap a three-game set with the hard-charging Rockies.

Cahill and De La Rosa will square off for the third time this season, having split two earlier meetings on April 20 and 25. De La Rosa got the better of the two in Colorado in the first meeting, hurling six scoreless innings in a 4-3 win, while Cahill yielded three earned runs in seven frames.

The Arizona starter, though, returned the favor five days later at home to begin his current stretch of 3-1 over his past five starts. Cahill has not allowed more than two runs in any of those outings and is coming off Friday's 9-2 win at Miami. He allowed a run on five hits over eight innings, but did walk four batters.

Cahill has issued 16 walks over his last five starts, something he'll look to address today.

"I was just keeping the ball down and making a pitch when I had to," Cahill said following the win over the Marlins. "I'll try to throw more strikes next time."

The 25-year-old righty is 3-4 with a 2.48 earned run average in nine starts this season.

De La Rosa will be trying to secure a fourth straight winning start, though he was lucky to escape with a victory last time out.

After hurling 13 scoreless frames over his first two victories of this streak, the 32-year-old southpaw was tagged for five runs on nine hits and a walk in five innings of work on Friday versus San Francisco. However, he got enough support to win a 10-9 decision.

De La Rosa moved to 5-3 with a 3.58 ERA in nine starts on the year.

A series victory today could move the Rockies into a first-place tie in the NL West as they currently trail both the Giants and Diamondbacks by a game in the standings.

Colorado has won four of its past five games, a stretch that started with a three-game sweep of visiting San Francisco. The Rockies will visit the Giants for three games this weekend.

After blowing a 4-0 lead on Tuesday night, the Rockies recovered to win a 5-4 decision in 10 innings. Wilin Rosario drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the frame, hitting a base hit to right field to score Carlos Gonzalez from second base.

"Wilin had a great approach there. I looked like he was approaching the big part of the field and really hit the ball hard the other way," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss.

Rosario finished the game with two hits and DJ LeMahieu went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI for the Rockies.

The Diamondbacks tied the game with a four-run seventh inning, getting two-RBI hits from Jason Kubel and Martin Prado. That helped the team battle back after starter Ian Kennedy allowed four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits over six innings in a no-decision.

"The biggest thing for Ian was he gave up four two-out hits. They got four runs off it. He kept us in the game, our bullpen just couldn't hold it," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said.

Arizona has won five of the nine meetings between these two teams this season.
