Ryu leads Dodgers into finale at Milwaukee
May 22, 2013 - 2:36 PM (Sports Network) - Korean-born lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu faces the Milwaukee Brewers for the first time in his brief career on Wednesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit Miller Park to wrap up a three-game series. The Brewers drew even in Tuesday's second game and handed former ace Zack Greinke his first career loss at Miller Park by taking a 5-2 victory over the Dodgers.
Carlos Gomez plated a pair of runs with a ground-rule double off Greinke (2-1). Ryan Braun and Yuniesky Betancourt added an RBI apiece.
Greinke, who went 15-0 at Miller Park during his one-plus seasons with the Brewers, was lit up for five runs on nine hits and was removed after failing to record an out in the fifth.
"I thought everything went bad, not just command," said Greinke. "I didn't have anything to keep them off balance, they got aggressive in the last inning, they put some balls in play. I have to be smarter out there, I was trying to throw too hard."
It was Greinke's first time back in Milwaukee since being traded to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim just before last year's trade deadline.
Mike Fiers (1-2) relieved a shaky Hector Burgos and worked out of a bases loaded jam to toss 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball. Jim Henderson stranded a pair of runners and struck out three in the ninth to earn his ninth save.
The Dodgers were a woeful 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 14 men on base. Greinke had two hits and an RBI while Nick Punto plated the Dodgers' only other run in their fourth loss in five games.
"This has kind of been the story of our offense this year," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. "We're not getting it done, we're not getting guys in. Zack wasn't as sharp as the last game, he kind of ran out of gas in the fifth inning."
The Dodgers won two of three from the Brewers in a late April series this season, while Milwaukee won six of seven games between the teams in 2012.
Ryu, a 26-year-old, debuted in the majors on April 2 against San Francisco and dropped a 3-0 verdict to the Giants, but has since won three of four in eight starts.
He tossed 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball for his most recent victory on May 11 against Miami, then got a no-decision in a subsequent start at Atlanta in which he allowed two runs in five innings.
The Dodgers are 5-4 in games he's pitched.
Ryu has allowed 21 earned runs and struck out 56 batters in 55 1/3 innings and opponents have hit him for a .246 average.
The Brewers counter with young righty Wily Peralta, who's lost two straight decisions and three of four since a two-game win streak.
The 24-year-old Dominican downed the Dodgers, 6-4, in Los Angeles on April 27 after allowing three runs and six hits in six innings with a walk and two strikeouts.
He was tagged for 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings against St. Louis in a subsequent start on May 2, and has given up a combined 32 hits and 20 runs in 21 1/3 innings over four May starts.
Peralta is 2-2 in five home starts this season.
