Lee's SO lifts Phillies in Miami
May 23, 2013 - 2:30 AM Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Eighty-five of Cliff Lee's 115 pitches went for strikes as the veteran left-hander tossed his 12th career shutout to guide the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-0 victory over the Miami Marlins in the rubber match of a three-game series from Marlins Park.Lee (5-2) struck out five and surrendered just three hits for Philadelphia, which improved to .500 on the road (12-12). Lee also went 2-for-4 at the plate to raise his batting average to .316.
Delmon Young homered for the second straight game and scored twice for the Phillies, while Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins collected two hits apiece.
Marlins starter Kevin Slowey (1-5) left after five innings with an apparent strained left lat muscle. Slowey had allowed just one run on six hits while fanning six.
Young's solo home run in the fourth, which landed in a similar spot in left- center as his homer from the previous night, gave the Phillies an early 1-0 lead.
Following a Young two-out infield single in the sixth, Dominic Brown launched the ball off the wall in right-center for an RBI triple and his first three- bagger of the season. Freddy Galvis, filling in for the injured Chase Utley, then lined a single to left to provide Lee with a 3-0 cushion.
Miami threatened Lee just once, when they loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning after Marcell Ozuna reached on an infield single, Justin Ruggiano walked and Lee pegged Chris Coghlan.
Nick Green then hit a sharp grounder to third base, with the Phillies' Michael Young instinctively throwing home to get the lead runner and catcher Erik Kratz turning and firing to first for the double play. Jeff Mathis then popped up to end the threat.
Game Notes
Utley missed his second straight game with a sore ribcage. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Thursday in Philadelphia ... Galvis stole his first career base in the sixth inning ... Every Phillies' starter had at least one hit except for Michael Young, who went 0-for-5 ... Miami's Derek Dietrich has reached base in all 12 games of his major league career after going 1-for-4.
