Twins top Tigers, end 10-game skid

May 26, 2013 - 12:57 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Minnesota Twins were looking to create some offense after managing to record just one hit off Anibal Sanchez and the Detroit Tigers on Friday.

The Twins were able to do so, scoring three runs in the first inning and snapping a 10-game losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers in the third of a four-game series at Comerica Park.

Joe Mauer, who broke up the potential no-hitter in the ninth inning on Friday, went 3-for-4 with a home run, while Justin Morneau and Chris Parmelee contributed an RBI apiece for the Twins.

Minnesota starter P.J. Walters (1-0), who made his season debut, allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings. Glen Perkins pitched a scoreless ninth to notch his ninth save.

"A nice, a long time coming," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "Scored early and our pitching staff did a great job. Walters was good. I think he started to getting the ball up a little bit there the last couple of innings, but he was very good and gave us a good start."

Jhonny Peralta had a solo homer and Torii Hunter drove in one run for the Tigers, who won the first two games of this series. Doug Fister (5-2) had seven strikeouts and gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk over seven frames.

"Fister settled down after the first inning and he pitched well," said Hunter. "We just couldn't get the run support that he needed. They (the Twins) lost 10 games in a row but they can beat any team, any day."

Mauer's solo shot came with one out in the first, but the ball bounced off the yellow line, prompting an umpire review that upheld the on-field call

Josh Willingham then drew a walk and scored on a Morneau double. Two batters later, Parmelee singled, scoring Morneau.

With runners on first and second in the third, Justin Morneau grounded into a double play. Joe Mauer, who had advanced to third, was sent back to second due to interference. Gardenhire came out to argue the call and was ejected.

The Tigers got on the board in the fifth. Hunter's two-out double brought Andy Dirks home to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Peralta's solo shot came with two outs in the sixth.

Twins center fielder Wilkin Ramirez made a inning-ending catch on an Omar Infante fly near the warning track in left center but collided with Willingham on the play. He left the game but was ok after being looked at by trainers.

Perkins came to pitch in the ninth. He gave up a single to Brayan Pena, but got the next two batters to end the game.
