Nationals erupt late to down Phils
May 27, 2013 - 4:08 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - The Washington Nationals used a five-run seventh inning and a stellar performance from Stephen Strasburg to beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-1, and win the three-game weekend series at Nationals Park.Strasburg (3-5), who continues to pitch well despite his record, threw eight strong innings of one-run ball. He scattered five hits while issuing no walks and striking out a season-high nine batters.
"Just trying to get it going a little," Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman said of the series win. "We haven't strung too long of a streak together this year."
At one point, Strasburg sat down ten straight and 15 out of 16 batters.
Steve Lombardozzi went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double and a run scored for Washington, while Adam LaRoche went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Cole Hamels (1-8) suffered his fifth straight loss -- the longest streak of his career -- after giving up five runs -- three earned -- over 6 1/3 innings. He let up six hits while striking out six and walking one..
"We're having a hard time scoring for him and it definitely seems like things aren't going his way right now," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said of Hamels.
Zimmerman opened up the seventh inning by beating out an infield single to second. LaRoche followed with a base hit and Ian Desmond moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
After Hamels intentionally walked Tyler Moore to load the bases with one out, Jhonatan Solano sent a broken-bat dribbler to third that scored two runs on a Michael Young throwing error. Young fielded the slow-roller cleanly and fired the ball home, but the low throw got past catcher Humberto Quintero, allowing Zimmerman and LaRoche to score.
Lombardozzi drove home two more runs with a double to shallow right and Denard Span added an RBI double with two outs to increase the lead to 5-0.
Hamels retired 11 in a row before running into trouble in the seventh inning. The Phillies continue to struggle with run support for Hamels. Over his last eight starts, the Phillies have the worst runs scored average of, 2.25, for any pitcher in the majors over that span.
The Phillies scored their only run in the eighth inning after Strasburg was called for a balk, allowing Ben Revere to score from third.
Moore added a RBI in the bottom of the eighth to lift the score to 6-1.
Tyler Clippard retired the side in order in the ninth inning.
Game Notes
Kevin Frandsen was ejected in the fourth inning for throwing his bat following a called third strike. He was replaced by Laynce Nix ... The Phillies committed a season-high three errors ... Washington was 3-for-13 with runners in scoring position.
