Red Sox pound Yanks

Jun 2, 2013 - 4:29 AM Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Mike Napoli belted a grand slam and Daniel Nava went 4-for-6 with a three-run shot and four RBI, as the Boston Red Sox hammered the New York Yankees, 11-1, Saturday night.

Felix Doubront (4-2) scattered six hits and gave up one run while striking out six batters and walking three over six innings to win for the first time in his last six appearances.

J.D. Drew tacked on a solo homer in the ninth inning. Napoli finished with three of Boston's 18 hits, as the AL East leaders evened the weekend series after CC Sabathia pitched New York to a 4-1 triumph Friday.

Phil Hughes (2-4) fanned seven over 4 1/3 innings, but surrendered seven hits and five runs in New York's sixth loss in seven contests and eighth in 11 tries.

Jackie Bradley Jr. doubled to center and Nava singled to start the Boston third inning. Mike Carp then doubled into the left field corner for a 1-0 lead. The ball hit the chalk line before a sliding Vernon Wells could get to it.

With one out, the Yankees elected to intentionally walk David Ortiz to fill the bases. That led to Napoli crushing a 2-2 pitch over the wall in right- center field for his fifth career grand slam.

"It's my job to be his protection," Napoli said of Ortiz. "When something like that happens it feels good to come through."

Jayson Nix scored on Chris Stewart's sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the fourth, but the Red Sox turned this game into a rout in the eighth. Jose Iglesias and Bradley singled ahead of Nava's blast to right off Adam Warren.

"That guy was on his game tonight against us," Stewart said of Dubront. "Tip your hat to him. He was able to get out of some situations and settle down after that."

Drew hit a one-out homer to right in the ninth. Warren, who was charged with eight hits and six runs on 70 pitches over the final three innings, continued to struggle. Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a ground-rule double to right-center and scored on an Iglesias single to left. Bradley doubled to left and Nava drove in the final run with a groundout.

The Yankees had only one man on base after the fourth inning, and that was a David Adams single in the sixth.

Game Notes

Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury was out of the lineup a second straight game due to a tight left groin ... Hughes threw 100 pitches, three less than Doubront ... Stewart departed the game after the fourth inning due to dehydration and was replaced by Austin Romine ... Yankees fan Bernando LaPallo, who is 111 years old, attended the game and chatted with shortstop Derek Jeter and manager Joe Girardi on the field prior to the contest.
