Volquez tries to help Padres to a sweep of Blue Jays
Jun 2, 2013 - 1:21 PM (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez tries to lead the San Diego Padres to a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday when the two teams close out their interleague set from Petco Park.Volquez snapped a two-start losing streak on Tuesday in Seattle, as he held the Mariners to a run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings to improve to 4-5 on the year to go along with a 5.20 ERA.
It was an encouraging outing for Volquez, who had surrendered five runs in each of his previous two starts.
"That's as good a hook as he's had all year," San Diego skipper Bud Black said.
Volquez has lost both of his starts to the Blue Jays and has looked bad in doing so, surrendering 11 runs (9 earned) in 9 1/3 innings of those outings.
After winning Friday's marathon opener in 17 innings, San Diego earned its first-ever series win against the Jays on Saturday, as Everth Cabrera had three hits and two RBI to carry the Padres to a 4-3 victory.
Robbie Erlin (1-0) picked up his first win in his first career start. He surrendered two runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings for San Diego, which has won four of its last five games.
"He pitched well," Padres manager Bud Black said of Erlin. "He came in and threw his strikes, used his three pitches, looked comfortable for the first pitch to his last."
Adam Lind smacked a solo homer among his two hits and scored twice for the Blue Jays, who have dropped four of their last five tilts.
Mark Buehrle (2-4) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits and a walk over six frames.
Getting the call for the Blue Jays on Sunday will be righty Ramon Ortiz, who starts in place of the injured Brandon Morrow. Morrow was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a right forearm strain.
Ortiz is 1-2 with a 5.01 ERA this season, but was just sent down the Triple-A on Friday after three consecutive two home run appearances. The 40-year-old is 2-3 lifetime versus the Padres, but hasn't faced them since 2011.
Toronto has won four of six games across two interleague series with the Padres, winning two of three in California in 2004 and two of three again there in 2010.
